Nation #2: Argentina
Character Name: Ignacio Ibañez
Powerbases (Pick Three):
- Military - Reform
- General Confederation of Labor
- Catholicism - Traditional
200 word explanation of your plans: Igancio takes power in a time of political turmoil for Argentina, however his main goal is keeping his government intact and alive. Despite political turmoil the economic situation of Argentina is hardly something one would want to drive his country away from. Raising the minimum wage however, and creating better working conditions under some regulation would be necessary to ensure a fair market in Argentina. Furthermore, introducing welfare programs for those under the poverty line and creating a stronger and Catholic society for traditional Argentinians would also be among his priorities. Another main focus of his would be keep the military strong in the event of any planned uprisings against the legitimate government of Argentina and Argentinians, however he does not want to use it for repressive measures against his people. He favors letting down on censorship and opening up Argentina to better relations with the world. Despite being under a military rule he believes his people deserve to be informed by reliable sources from within his country and around the world. Finally, his foreign policy would be to maintain cordial relations with nations around him and renewal of relations with the United States.

200 word explanation of your plans: At the time the presidency was constitutionally limited to two terms, but a constitutional amendment was forced through the National Assembly in 1969 to allow him to seek a third term. The government will attempt to proclaim a joint communiqué for reunification with North Korea on J and have Red Cross talks in Seoul and Pyongyang. The opposition shall be swept under the table, and Chung-Hee shall attempt to retain power. (basically, playing right from the Wikipedia page, and responding with anything to keep myself in power).

Nation #1: Poland
Character Name: Jakub Berman
Powerbases (Pick Three): Communist Party - Tradition, State Security, Lower Class
200 word explanation of your plans:

Jakub Berman is the former head of the Stalin-era Ministry of Public Security, and was considered Stalin's right-hand man in Poland for roughly a decade. He was stripped of his power and position during the Kruschev era, but his political fortunes rose once again as a result of Moscow's disapproval of the reformist administrations in Warsaw (i.e. those of Gomulka, Bielecki and Kohl). Under Bielecki's rule, Berman began working for the KGB and other Warsaw Pact intelligence agencies to undermine his reform proposals and damage Bielecki's popularity. Following the ouster of Bielecki, Berman was officially rehabilitated as a Party member and reinstated on the Central Committee. He strongly opposed the rise to power of Adam Kohl, and frequently bunted heads with the liberal-minded premier, whom he accused of "having no backbone"; Kohl unwisely tolerated such dissent against his régime, and Berman achieved his ouster with the support of the conservative members of the Central Committee and the state security services.

Now officially in the driver's seat in Warsaw, Berman is preparing to consolidate his power. He has a strong base of support among the State Security services of Poland, given his illustrious (or infamous) past as the head of the Stalinist secret police. Berman is rumoured to be planning a new purge of the Party to remove, once and for all, its reformist wing. He has said in his speeches that he intends to "wring the necks of the revisionist traitors"; a number of Poles, including former supporters of Bielecki and Kohl, are reportedly attempting to flee the country for fear of violent repression. Berman is ready and willing to use all of the state apparatus at his disposal to maintain order, including the Military if necessary; he has not ruled out declaring a state of emergency, in which the cooperation of the army would be essential.

Internationally, Berman sees the world as fundamentally divided between capitalist and socialist. Hardened by the struggle against Fascism, he sees no room for compromise with the international bourgeoisie and its "corrupt, decadent puppet politicians." Berman is a firm adherent of Josef Stalin's "Socialism in One Country", applying it to Poland. He believes, however, that one of Stalin's few mistakes was being too accommodating towards the West, a mistake that was exacerbated under the revisionist Kruschev. For Berman, the conflict between the socialist and capitalist worlds is inevitable, and the socialist forces must prepare themselves militarily and economically for victory; a siege mentality is simply the natural attitude under such circumstances. In contrast to the previous policy of trading with Western countries for consumer goods, Berman intends to eliminate Western imports and turn instead towards the COMECON for any consumer goods. He firmly believes that Poland should try to produce everything it can itself and then seek to support its allies in COMECON as part of an integrated economic system. Berman also intends to return the economic focus to heavy industries and away from consumer goods production, which he feels constitutes unnecessary indulgence of "quasi-bourgeois decadent tendencies"; Leninist austerity is to be the order of the day.

Nation #1: Canada

Character Name: Pierre Trudeau

Powerbases (Pick Three): Liberal Party, Lower Middle Class, United Kingdom

200 word explanation of your plans: To make Canada a major world player by increasing relations with Western nations against the Warsaw Pact and solidify Canada's place as one of the world's elite nations. Keeping Quebec nationalists at bay, hopefully by supporting bilingualism, will assert the province as a part of Canada, and will be of principle concern to a well played round as Prime Minister. In addition, balancing the needs and wants of the Prairies with their oil interests in mind will also be paramount. The main theme in domestic policy will be "a just society" with the underlying themes being the defense of newly enacted universal healthcare and expanding the Canadian welfare state. Strengthening U.S.-Canadian ties will be as important as ever during this Cold War period, as much so as the ties with the United Kingdom. Though remaining steadfastly loyal to the Crown is important, we would like the long-term goal of making Canada 100% independent from the United Kingdom by enacting a formal constitution. Improving Canada's economic and political situation abroad will be at the forefront of this round.

Nation #1: Yugoslavia
Character Name: Lazar Koliševski
Powerbases (Pick Three): Communist Party - Reform, Military, Lower Classes
200 word explanation of your plans: During this time period in Yugoslavia, Croatian student protests and demands for greater autonomy amongst the Yugoslav republics led to the altering of the Yugoslavian Constitution in 1974. The alterations gave greater autonomy to the republics while undermining Serbian power within the federal government structure. These changes laid the foundation for the civil war and break up in the 90's. I hope to take Yugoslavia off this path by responding differently to these protests and to focus on centralization as opposed to decentralization. As Tito was in power in reality at this time, I would like to have him take ill and die now, in 1970, rather than in 1980 when he actually died. Upon his actual illness and death, he handed control to his trusted lieutenant Lazar Koliševski, and I imagine that he would have done so in 1970 as well. Therefore, I would like to play as Lazar Koliševski.

Lazar Koliševski is a Macedonian and so I think that his status as a non-Serb will help him in his efforts of centralization just as Tito's did in earlier times because people will not feel that he is a Serb seeking Serbian hegemony. My goal is to bring the republics closer together by focusing on integration strategies. Among these will be nationwide language standardization incorporating aspects of all dialects, interfaith dialogue programs, geographical mobility initiatives so as to effect greater ethnic diversity between the republics, and so on. Furthermore, I intend to make economic reforms that maintain the spirit of communism, yet slowly lessen state planning in the economy. I plan to do this by giving more autonomy to individual business enterprises, yet to ensure that these enterprises are worker controlled and democratically managed. I have other plans as well, but I don't want to pass the limit!

Nation #1: Pakistan
Character Name: Zulfikar Ali Bhutto
Powerbases (Pick Three): MIlitary - Reform, PPP, Business
200 word explanation of your plans:

Work towards ending the situation in East Pakistan using all necessary measures. (Sorry but I'll probably RP this one as it occurred IRL)

Stand as a bulwark to Indian expansion and militarism, bringing their actions to light in the global community and requesting sanctions where applicable. Expansion of the armed forces will be avoided where possible, but if Indian military expansion continues unchecked Pakistan will be forced to respond in kind to prevent the disparity in numbers from reaching critical levels. Continue economic and social reforms. Social reforms will be funded through increased trading with the PRC and the West, with the ultimate goal of expanding Pakistan's industrial and technological capabilities to transform us into a manufacturing powerhouse that can supply the demand placed on us by the increased trade. Social reforms will include education and welfare as well as improving the constitution of Pakistan to restore democracy. Work on further Muslim unity through the OIC, a sadly neglected idea thus far.

Nation #1: South Africa
Character Name: Marius Barnard
Powerbases (Pick Three): National Party - Reform; Business; USA/NATO
200 word explanation of your plans: I am on a firmly pro-capitalist, pro-business, anti-Communist platform. I believe that the best way to grow our economy is to limit government intervention of business, and to make South Africa an attractive a place to open a business and hire workers. I support using military resources to fight the Red threat currently afoot in much of southern Africa, and to protect our borders from a potential red scare. That being said, there is the elephant in the room of apartheid. Secretly, I support abolishing apartheid in whole, although, I’m not going to say that publicly, at least not yet. I will propose a more pragmatic policy than my predecessors, however. Mixed marriages and sexual relations will be decriminalised, and the pass laws system will be completely abolished should my will prevail. I intend to do this to repair our tenuous relations with many of who should be our world allies: the United Kingdom, United States, and the nations of the Commonwealth and the European Union. I support some contact with the African National Congress, but if they want my cooperation, they must end their armed struggle; when negotiating with my people, however, I will allow them to have armed guards for security measures, either at their own expense or the government’s.
